The infamous climate change denialist Lord Monckton in a meeting with some of Australia’s mining giants. He outlines the need for them (and specifically the super rich) to gain influence in the media, buy out a satellite channel and to create an Australian version of Fox news in order to have a “free and balanced” media.

In other news, Gina Rineheart - mining magnate and richest woman in the world - is poised to take 2 or 3 chairs in the boardroom of the biggest media corporation in Australia, see: http://theconversation.edu.au/fairfax-or-gina-fax-lets-have-the-debate-before-its-over-7721. Do not expect scientifically accurate reports on climate change in the future.

I’m am now entirely rooting for social media, blog sites and internet news to win the day against print media.

Dr. Carmen Lawrence - professor of psychology at UWA, former Premier of Western Australia. Currently my lecturer for a unit on applying psychology to policy and every day life.

Lawrence has some interesting insights into the psychology behind behaviours related to  climate change. Worth watching for anyone interested in why its so hard to get people to change their attitudes and behaviours and what we can do about it.

UC Davis police officer pepper sprays sitting students because, well, just because.
Think that’s %$#ing horrible? The video’s worse.

This is not a political blog, and I am not a resident in the USA with little knowledge of its political process, so I have so far restrained myself from commenting on the Occupy movement and the police violence that has been widely documented throughout the blog-o-sphere. This footage, however, deserves attention and I feel I could not let it go by as both a citizen of the USA and a university student in Australia. I could not imagine this happening on my campus - absolutely outrageous.

liberal-life:

And the trend continues…

Atheism still ranks at the top of traits that would cause voters to be less likely to support a candidate. According to this, people view atheism more negatively than extramarital affairs.

Quite disheartening, but all the more motivation for American atheists to “come out,” promote and normalize atheism.

Jon Stewart debates Bill O’Reilly about the invitation rapper Common received to read poetry at the White House last week.

Pt 2

Need this on my Tumblr, obviously.

for later watching purposes.

Jon Stewart pulled out his serious face… and cornered Billy Boy with some very simple logic.

Owned.

I don’t normally post about American politics, but seeing Bill O’Reilly get utterly destroyed was just way too satisfying. Had to share.

Support Darwin Day! « Texas Freethought

United States’ Representative Pete Stark has just introduced a bill (H. Res. 81) into Congress that looks to designate February 12th as “Darwin Day”.

In a statement Representative Stark said, “Darwin’s birthday is a good time for us to reflect on the important role of science in our society. It is also a time to redouble our efforts to ensure that children are being taught scientific facts, not religious dogma, and to fight back against those who seek to undermine the science of climate change for political ends.”

The bill can be read in its entirety here and we urge everyone that is interested in making this bill into law to e-mail their representative.

Mao's Little Red Book (Bible)

My mum was telling me about this equivalent of the bible that she and her family had to carry and recite during the Chinese revolution.

The most printed book written in the twentieth century,[1] Quotations had an estimated 5 to 6.5 billion copies printed [2] during Mao’s attempt to transform Chinese society. The book’s phenomenal popularity may be because it was essentially an unofficial requirement for every Chinese citizen to own, to read, and to carry it at all times during the later half of Mao’s rule, especially during the Cultural Revolution.[3] Chinese citizens caught not carrying the book were usually beaten by the Red Guards.[3][citation needed]

This infallible dogma was forced into everyone’s belief systems. Its contents were studied in small groups in which the meanings of the passages were discussed. Students were expected to be able to recite from memory the quotes on a page when told its page number. Before each meal Mao was thanked in prayer.

Someone tell me that Mao’s regime was atheistic again.

Christian Quote of the Day: ‘The planet won’t be destroyed by Global Warming because God promised Noah,’says politician bidding to chair U.S. energy committee. cc

friendlyatheist:

I have absolutely no qualms about people practising their faith in the RIGHT way, but I find this guy’s assertion somewhat,er,problematic. Am I wrong for thinking the person who chairs the U.S. Energy Committee should probably know a bit about science?

Robert Reich: The Real Center of American Politics: A Reflection on Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert

robertreich:

The true center of American politics isn’t found where most of us agree. We fiercely disagree. That’s not a problem. Democracy assumes disagreement.

The true center is about how we resolve those disagreements. Most of us believe we should work them out respectfully.

We don’t believe in winning…
